UPnP lets devices request that specific communication ports be opened between themselves and the internet. For example, a gaming console might use port 3074 to communicate with online gaming servers. Instead of configuring that port yourself, UPnP lets the console ask the router to open it for you.

Jan 03, 2010 · sigh, if we use the same logic folks use with upnp we would turn off all ports and all services. Most of the issues were bad router implementations exposing upnp control messages to the WAN side of the router - this is just as bad as exposing web interface and SSH. This is not a flaw in upnp it is a flaw in basic systems construction.
